At Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County, we could not be more thankful than to our partners at Feeding America for providing us with the resources, expertise, and funding through these months of pandemic relief. Feeding America has provided COVID-19 relief grants throughout the year, all from their own generous national donors, and divided among the more than 200 food banks across the country.
For us in Santa Cruz County, Feeding America grants have enabled Second Harvest to purchase the foods to distribute to our community, are supporting our large drive-thru Friday food distributions at the Santa Cruz County fairgrounds, helped us support our partners at the Community Food Bank of San Benito County, funded the cooking videos we are placing online for everyone to access, supported our market match program with all our farmers’ markets so we can double your produce buying power, and helped us keep Santa Cruz County residents employed as our warehouse staff and truck drivers.
Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. With donations and support from businesses, corporations, government organizations and individuals, the Feeding America network of food banks, pantries and meal programs serve virtually every community in the United States — 40 million people, including 12 million children and 7 million seniors. Every year the Feeding America network provides over 4.3 billion meals, helping 1 in 7 Americans facing hunger live more secure and stable lives.
While the pandemic is not over, Feeding America expects food insecurity in local communities in 2021, such as Santa Cruz County, will improve over what we have all just experienced in 2020. We would love to see that recovery.
